現在は、過去と未来の綱引きである。The present is a tug of war between the past and the future.

個人レベルでは、過去は「今までの自分」であり、未来は「新しい自分」である。現在の自分が抱く葛藤は、過去と未来の綱引きそのものである。過去が勝てば、今までの習慣を維持していく。逆に、未来が勝てば、新しい習慣を受け入れていく。At the individual level, the past is the “old self” and the future is the “new self.” The current conflict I have is the tug of war between the past and the future. If the past wins, we will maintain our habits. On the contrary, if the future wins, we will accept new habits.

ただ、未来は見えない。だから、この綱引きで私たちは「過去」を応援しがちである。However, the future cannot be seen. Therefore, we tend to support the “past” in this tug of war.

それは、社会レベルでも同様である。「今までのそうしてきたのが慣習だから…」「私たちの社会の価値観だから…」という慣用に支配されて「過去」を応援しがちである。The same is true at the social level. We tend to support the “past” under the control of the customs of “because it is customary to do so …” and “because of the values of our society …”.

長く平和な時代を過ごしてきた私たちにとって、「過去」の習慣や価値観に従うことは、必要な知恵でもある。For those of us who have lived in peace for a long time, following the customs and values of the “past” is also a necessary wisdom.

しかし、「未来」という変化を応援した時代もあった。However, there was a time when we supported the change of the “future.”

仏教の価値観を受け入れた飛鳥奈良時代、西欧の習慣を取り入れた明治時代、民主主義に梶をきった昭和20年代など。The Asuka Nara period, which accepted Buddhist values, the Meiji period, which adopted Western customs, and the 1945’s, when democracy began.

私たちは、価値観が変化すべき時に、それを敏感に受け止め前進してきた。We have been sensitive to and moving forward when values should change.

2021年以降。再び社会の仕組みが大きく変わっていく予感がする。もちろん、正しく必要な方向に。After 2021. I have a feeling that the structure of society will change drastically again. Of course, in the right direction.

・ウィルスとは共存するしかないことを再認識した、生物学的人類の弱さBiological human weaknesses reaffirmed that they can only coexist with viruses

・国境を閉ざしたりロックダウンすることで崩れてしまう経済の仕組みEconomic mechanism that collapses when borders are closed or locked down

・100年に1度の危機に適切な対策を講じることのできない政治システムA political system that cannot take appropriate measures against the once-in-a-century crisis

・社会にいつの間にか広がっていたさまざまな格差に気づけない集団意識Collective consciousness that does not notice the various disparities that have spread to society

・困っている者に共感できず「自助」を唱えるばかりのリーダーシップLeadership that just insists on “self-help” without being able to sympathize with people in need

など、今まで見抜けなかったこれらの課題にも、顕微鏡サイズの新型コロナウィルスが気づかせてくれた。The new microscope-sized coronavirus has made us aware of these issues that we have not been able to see until now.

「昔は良かった」「今の若い者は」という幻想は封印し、今度は内から変わらなければならない。この国を支えていく若い世代と共に「未来」を応援し、新しい時代を切り拓いていかなければならない。We have sealed the illusions of “good old days …” and “young people now …” and now we have to change from within. We must support the “future” together with the younger generation who support this country and open up a new era.

もちろん、海外からの都合のよい労働力を甘受している施策も、真の多文化共生主義に変わっていくのだろう。Of course, measures that accept a convenient workforce from overseas will also change to true multiculturalism.

先の見えない葛藤は苦しみだ。しかし、新しい価値観を生み出す可能性は、未来からの光でもある。The uncertain conflict is suffering. However, the possibility of creating new values is also the light from the future.

100年後、「あの時も時代の変わり目だった」と振り返ることになる予感がする。100 years later, I have a feeling that our offspring will look back, “It was a turning point at that time.”
