現在の物理世界の動きを全て計算できる知性が存在していたら、未来の姿を完全に予測できる。If we had the intelligence to calculate all the movements of the current physical world, we could completely predict the future.

このように、フランスの数学者ピエール=シモン・ラプラスは想像した。Thus, the French mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace imagined.

ラプラスの悪魔である。Laplace’s demon.

ニュートン以来、古典力学は地上の物体や太陽系の惑星の動きを解明してきた。だから、ラプラスの悪魔は実在するように思う。Since Newton, classical mechanics has elucidated the movement of objects on the ground and planets in the solar system. So I think Laplace’s demon is real.

しかし、量子力学による電子の振る舞いによって、この悪魔は退治された。However, the behavior of electrons by quantum mechanics has exterminated this demon.

安心した。「自分の未来は決まっている」と自暴自棄になる必要はなくなった。I was relieved. It is no longer necessary to desperately say, “My future is decided.”

しかし、電子の振る舞いは「確率的」である。ということは、ラプラスの悪魔は退治されたのではなく、今でもサイコロをふって未来を決めていたのだ。However, the behavior of electrons is “stochastic”. This means that Laplace’s demon was not exterminated, but still rolled the dice to determine the future.

どんなサイコロを振っているのだろうか。サイコロの目の出る確率は平等だろうか。それとも、時代劇に出てくる賭博場面のようにイカサマだろうか。What kind of dice is the devil rolling? Is the probability of rolling dice equal? Or is it crazy like the gambling scene in a historical drama?

先日、自分の進む道をラプラスに委ねた。「お前の運命は、俺が決めてやる」とほくそ笑んでいるように感じる。The other day, I entrusted my advance and retreat to Laplace. “I’ll decide your destiny,” Laplace feels like laughing.

そんな弱い心に負けないように、せめて自分でサイコロを振らせてくれないだろうか。Will Laplace let me roll the dice so as not to lose to such a weak heart?
