浄土とは、大乗仏教思想における清浄国土のことで、仏が実践を積んだり人々に悟りを開かせたりする別世界のことである。Jodo is a country of enlightenment in Mahayana Buddhist thought, another world in which Hotoke practices and enlightens people.

法隆寺の釈迦仏や東大寺の毘盧遮那仏は、この世界を浄土実践の場とする仏である。Shaka-Butsu at Horyuji Temple and Rushana-Butsu at Todaiji Temple are hotokes that make this world a place of enlightenment and practice.

日本の平安時代以降にさかんとなった浄土教では、釈迦仏の入滅で仏のいなくなったこの世界(末法世界)の救いを、西方浄土にいる阿弥陀仏に求めた。In Jodo-kyo, which has been active since the Heian period in Japan, people prayed to Amida-Butsu in western Jodo for the salvation of this world (Mappo world) where Hotoke disappeared due to the destruction of Shaka-Butsu.

つまり、仏教の浄土教思想は多元宇宙論である。In other words, Buddhist Jodo-kyo thought is a multiverse.

両者の違うことは、仏教の「死後に別世界に生まれ変わり続けること」と多元宇宙論の「全ての世界に、同時に自分が存在し得ること」である。The difference between the two is the Buddhist “continuing to be reborn in another world after death” and the multiverse “being able to exist in all worlds at the same time”.

平安時代、日本で浄土教が広まった理由は阿弥陀仏信仰と念仏が結びついたからである。The reason why Jodo-kyo spread in Japan during the Heian period is that the Amida-Butsu faith and Nembutsu were linked.

念仏とは歌である。法事でお坊さんが唱えてくれる「南無阿弥陀仏…」だけが念仏ではない。Nembutsu is a song. “Namu Amida Butsu …”, which the monk chanted in the Buddhist affairs, is not the only Nembutsu.

世界には、勇気や元気を与えて「前向きに生きよ」と感じさせる歌が溢れている。The world is full of songs that give courage and energy and make you feel “live positively”.

さて、末法世界とは、釈迦入滅後2000年から続く1万年間のことらしい。By the way, it seems that the mappo world is the 10,000 years that have continued since 2000 after Shaka’s death.

釈迦は紀元前5世紀の人物である。だから、西暦1600年前からこの世界では、どんなに修行を積んでも悟りを開けなくなっている。Buddha is a person from the 5th century BC. Therefore, since 1600 AD, in this world, no matter how much training you practice, you cannot be enlightened.

やはり、西方浄土に生まれ変わるように、念仏で西方浄土の阿弥陀仏に祈るしかないのだろうか。After all, is there no choice but to pray to Amida-Butsu of Western Todo in Nembutsu so that I can be reborn as Western Jodo?

もし多元宇宙論の方が正しければ、別世界の自分も同じことを考えているに違いない。If the multiverse is correct, I must be thinking the same as I am in another world.

それなら「人生は一度だけ」である。そして「宇宙に無限数の私が存在している。」Then “life is only once”. And “there are an infinite number of me in the universe.”

よし、辛いことも多いこの世界を、別世界の自分と共に力を合わせて、希望の歌を歌いながら生きぬこう。Alright, let’s live in this world, which is often painful, while singing the song of hope with ourselves in another world.

これが新時代の科学的浄土思想なのかもしれない。This may be the new era of scientific Jodo-kyo.
