最近よく記事で目にする「LAWS」とは法律のことではなかった。”LAWS”, which I often see in articles these days, was not a law.

「LAWS」とは、自律型致死兵器システムの略である。”LAWS” is an abbreviation for Lethal Autonomous Weapon System.

20世紀末から加速している、インターネットやAIなどの情報技術を活用した最新兵器だ。It is the latest weapon that utilizes information technology such as the Internet and AI, which has been accelerating since the end of the 20th century.

30年前、LAWSはSF映画の想像物でしかなかった。スターウォーズのような遠い未来の技術だと思っていた。しかし、それは現実になりつつある。Thirty years ago, LAWS was just an imagination of science fiction movies. I thought it was a technology of the distant future like Star Wars. But that is becoming a reality.

戦争の歴史を振り返ると、第一次大戦を「化学の戦争」、第二次大戦を「物理の戦争」に例えられるそうだ。Looking back on the history of war, it seems that World War I can be compared to “Chemical War” and World War II to “Physical War”.

第一次大戦では化学兵器が使用されるようになり、第二次大戦では原子爆弾が使用されるようになったからだ。This is because chemical weapons were used in World War I, and atomic bombs were used in World War II.

あってはならないことだが、もし第三次が起こったなら、それは「情報技術の戦争」になるのだろうか。It shouldn’t be, but if World War III happened, would it be an “information technology war”?

化学兵器の父は化学者フリッツ・ハーバーである。彼は、アンモニアの合成でノーベル賞を獲得した。The father of chemical weapons is the chemist Fritz Haber. He won the Nobel Prize for the synthesis of ammonia.

そして、原子爆弾の父は理論物理学者ロバート・オッペンハイマーである。彼は、アメリカのエンリコ・フェルミ賞を獲得した。And the father of the atomic bomb is theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer. He won the Enrico Fermi Award in the United States.

この両者に共通するのが「自分の研究が戦争を早期に終わらせて、多くの兵士の命を救うこと」を信じていたことだ。What they both have in common is that they believed that their research would end the war early and save the lives of many soldiers.

そしてもうひとつ、晩年に「自分の研究が大勢の命を奪うことになったことを悔いていたこと」である。And one more thing, in his later years, “I regretted that my research had killed many people.”

さて、人工知能の父はコンピュータ学者ジョン・マッカーシーである。彼は、チューリング賞やアメリカ国家科学賞を獲得している。Now, the father of artificial intelligence is computer scholar John McCarthy. He has won the Turing Award and the National Medal of Science.

彼は2011年に他界しているので、人工知能の未来は私たちに託されている。He passed away in 2011, so the future of artificial intelligence is entrusted to us.

世界の大国がLAWSの開発に力を入れる理由の一つも「この技術が多くの兵士の命を救うこと」らしい。It seems that one of the reasons why the world’s major powers are focusing on the development of LAWS is that “this technology saves the lives of many soldiers.”

私は、マッカーシーが天国で「LAWSにもlawsが必要だ! 」と叫んでいるような気がする。I feel like McCarthy is screaming in heaven, “LAWS also needs laws!”

人類の歴史に、世界大戦は2つだけでいい。World War III is not necessary for human history.
